Ashfall Wardens
Ashfall Wardens is the kind of mobile RPG that respects your intelligence. You lead a small band of wardens across a landscape recovering from a volcanic winter, and the writing carries most of the weight. Conversations branch in ways that actually matter, and I had two very different playthroughs because of a single early decision about who to trust.
Combat is turn-based and readable even on a small screen. Each warden has a distinct role, and positioning on the hex grid means more than raw stats. The touch controls are thoughtful — drag to move, tap to confirm an ability, with a clear undo before you commit. I never once fought the interface, which is rarer than it should be.
The progression is generous without being grindy. You unlock new skills through story beats as much as levels, so exploring and talking to people pays off. It's a longer commitment than most phone games, but every session ended with me wanting one more scene.
