Why some touch controls just feel right

Nothing kills a good mobile game faster than bad controls. I've dropped titles I genuinely liked because the virtual stick drifted or the buttons sat exactly where my thumb rested by accident.

The best control schemes do a couple of simple things. They keep interactive elements away from where your palms naturally sit, and they give you options. Dust Circuit letting me swap tilt for buttons is the difference between me uninstalling and me chasing lap times.

Context-sensitive controls help too. A single tap that means different things depending on what you're pointing at feels natural once it's tuned right. Lantern Hollow does this so smoothly you forget you're playing on glass.

My rule of thumb: if I'm still fighting the controls after ten minutes, that's on the developer, not me. A well-designed game teaches you its inputs without a tutorial wall.

Test your controls on a small phone in a moving vehicle, developers. That's where they either survive or fall apart.
